  • This is a PDF knitting pattern.

Gather a colorful collection of fingering weight yarns and lace weight mohair silk to knit this large wavy shlanket. The main portion of the shawl is knit sideways starting with an I-cord tail. Bands of brioche are worked with fingering weight wool as the foreground MC + West Wool Glowhair held double for the background CC. Additional colors of fingering weight wool are used for the short row garter stitch stripes. The pattern includes a video tutorial demonstrating the short row and brioche techniques. Once the main arched shape is knitted, stitches are picked up for a final wavy border. The final shape is epic in scale and very fluid with an ethereal drape thanks to the shimmering mohair silk stripes. Dive into your stash and have fun playing with splashy stripes for your Brioripple Shawl.

    Yarn
    Fingering weight

The sample features fingering weight for the MC (main color) foreground brioche sections and the AC (accent color) garter stitch short row stripes. Two strands of the same color of lace weight mohair silk are held together for the CC (contrast color) background brioche sections. You can use fingering weight yarns for all the colors or hold two strands of lace weight mohair silk together for the CC background brioche sections to create a version like the photographed sample.

Yardage - Approximately 3800yds / 3475m total if you are using 2 strands of lace weight mohair silk held together for the CC brioche background stripes

    OR

Approximately 2900yds / 2652m total if you are using fingering weight yarn for all colors including the CC (background brioche color)

Foreground brioche + reverse stockinette border stripes

    CC - 1800yds / 1646m total 185g
Background brioche + stockinette stitch border stripes. Mohair is held double. If you are substituting a fingering weight yarn for your CC background brioche colors, then you will need approximately 900yds / 823m). 8 balls of lace weight mohair silk in 8 different colors (25g each ball) should be enough for all of the CC background brioche sections + stockinette stitch border CC stripes.

    AC - 1000yds / 914m
    Garter stitch short rows

Each CC stripe (background brioche color) uses about 5g of lace weight mohair holding two strands of the same color together.

Each MC stripe (foreground brioche color) uses about 7g of fingering weight yarn.

Each AC stripe (garter stitch short row wedge) uses about 10g of fingering weight yarn.

  • A variety of fingering weight yarns including, Life in the Long Grass Singles, Mominoki Sock Fine 4ply, & Twisted Ambitions Sweet Sock 4ply for the MC & AC stripes. West Wool Glowhair is held double for the CC background brioche sections.

    West Wool Glowhair (64% Mohair, 36% Mulberry Silk; 229yds / 210m per 25g ball)

MC (main color) = foreground brioche
CC (contrast color) = background brioche
AC (accent color) = garter stitch short row stripes + I-cord CO & BO

8 colors (1 ball each color) of West Wool Glowhair is enough yarn to create the shawl using lace weight mohair held double for the CC’s. Use as many colors as you like to create a scrappy Brioripple Shawl. I used colorways Dutch Sky, Greykjavik, Canal House, Copenhagen, Sand, Biscuit, Mocha, & Dijon for the sample.
