  • This is a PDF knitting pattern.

Gather a pile of colorful yarn and knit this adorable jacket for babies and kids. The new sizing for this pattern is based off of the original Penguono design. Use DK or worsted weight yarns for all sizes. Fingering weight yarn held double will work beautifully for marled effects. Add some mohair or alpaca to fluff it up.

Babies and kids will be transformed with their exuberant Pengweenos!

  • Sizes
Baby (Toddler, Kiddo 1, Kiddo 2)

The Toddler size is shown in green on a 2 year-old with a gauge of 16 sts = 4” / 10cm. This size and gauge has generous positive ease with room to grow.

The smaller Toddler size is shown in a bright coral and red rainbow palette on the same 2-year old with a gauge of 18 sts = 4” / 10cm. This version is a bit smaller with less ease than the green sample.

This pattern is written in four sizes with two suggested gauge options resulting in eight total sizes. There is a gauge and size chart on page 2 of the pattern to help select your size.

    By following the two recommend gauge options you will be able to knit 8 total sizes. 0 – 3 months, 6 – 12 months, 1 – 2 years, 2 – 4 years, 4 – 6 years, 6 – 8 years, 8 – 10 years, & 10 – 12 years.

    Baby sizes are intended to fit with 1 – 4” / 2.5 – 10cm of positive ease.
    Toddler sizes are intended to fit with 5 – 8” / 13 – 20cm of positive ease.
    Kiddo 1 sizes are intended to fit with 6 – 12” / 15 – 30cm of positive ease.
    Kiddo 2 sizes are intended to fit with 12 – 16” / 30 – 41cm of positive ease.

    Yarn
    DK or Worsted weight
Hold two strands of fingering weight yarn together for marled sections. Hold lace weight mohair together with your other yarns at anytime for fuzzy accents.

    Yardage
Lots of yarn bits and leftovers!
I recommend having a pile of approximately 250 (350, 500, 600)g of yarn to create this jacket. The spirit of this project is to use up leftover bits of yarn and single skeins as you paint with colors.

    Needles
    US 6 – 8 / 4 – 5mm circular in 40” / 100cm length or size needed to obtain gauge.

    Notions
1 stitch marker, 1 split ring marker, tapestry needle, optional button or toggle if you wish to fasten the front of the jacket with a button loop and button.

Pattern Notes: Instructions include when to break yarn after each section, but instructions do not indicate what colors to use or when to stripe yarns. Those choices are totally up to you! Improvise and play with stripes and color blocks within each section.

The instructions include several photos to use for color and construction reference. Use the photos on the last page to help visualize where each section is on the completed jacket.
